Historic Agreement Signed to Enhance Health Services in East Sepik

23 Sep 2024

Yesterday morning marked a significant milestone in the delivery of health services in the East Sepik region with the signing of a Service Level Agreement (SLA) between the East Sepik Provincial Health Authority (ESPHA) and the East Sepik Christian Health Services (ESPCHS). The ceremony, held at Boram General Hospital in Wewak, was witnessed by a diverse group of stakeholders, including pastors, ESPHA directors, and CHS staff.

The SLA was signed by the CEO of ESPHA and the Christian Health Service Managers, with notable attendance from the Sepik SDA Health Services Manager and Director of Adventist Health Services, Mr. Daiven Watio. "This is a milestone that we have all been working and praying towards, and I thank God and all of our team and the administration of Sepik SDA Mission for making this possible. To God be the glory," stated Mr. Watio.

East Sepik Provincial Health Authority CEO, Mr. Mathew Kaluvia, elaborated on some important elements of the agreement, including details on funding and the availability of funds. He highlighted the significance of the meeting, stating, "Though it is a small gathering, I want to assure you all that this is a very significant gathering. Despite our challenges in our health indicators in our province, we really need this agreement to bridge the gap between us and you all, the CHS facilities, to make this possible," he added.

The agreement forms a partnership between Provincial Health Authorities and Christian Health Services to enhance healthcare, especially in underserved areas. The government will fund church-run facilities, while church agencies manage operations for efficient service delivery. It sets specific health services, standards, and performance metrics, with monitoring mechanisms to ensure accountability. This collaboration aims to significantly improve health outcomes where they are needed most.

The president of the Sepik Mission of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Pastor Henry Monape, was also present to witness this significant agreement.

This collaborative approach is expected to maximize the reach and impact of health services in the greater Sepik Region, heralding a new era in the delivery of healthcare. The partnership is ready to address the challenges faced by rural and underserved communities, ensuring that quality health services are accessible to all.
